Story
Sarah`s Funding Legacy
Our wonderful Sarah passed away on mid summers day 2022 after a very brave and dignified fight, we are all devastated.
Unfortunately through no fault of her own, Sarah contracted Peritoneal Mesothelioma, a very rare cancer. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is much less common than pleural mesothelioma and though the precise figures are unknown, peritoneal mesothelioma probably represents no more than 7-10% of all mesotheliomas.
Data shows that there were 2,718 cases of Mesothelioma diagnosed each year, 2016 - 2018 average UK.
New cases of Peritoneal Mesothelioma in UK approximately 271 each year.
New cases of Peritoneal Mesothelioma diagnosed in Scotland is approximately 20 each year.
Unfortunately there is no cure for this type of cancer and it is a particularly debilitating disease.
We cannot praise highly enough the medical teams who helped to look after Sarah, from the GP and nurses in North Berwick, Consultants and Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Western General Hospital and the local Specialist Community Palliative Care team and Consultants. They all worked together to make Sarah as comfortable as possible.
Following discussion with the medical team, the family are determined to raise awareness of this terrible disease and invite you, where appropriate, to raise funds with them for Mesothelioma UK.

These funds will be used to help with the early diagnosis, research and treatment of people with Mesothelioma.
By raising awareness, we hope to enhance support and in time reduce the number of people who suffer with this terrible disease.
Mesothelioma UK has helped to fund the Scottish Mesothelioma Network.
The Scottish Mesothelioma Network, working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, Mesothelioma UK and NHS Scotland, is comprised of a team of clinicians from across Scotland who collaborate to share best practice and provide high-quality clinical care, information and support to all patients, wherever they live in the country. The network ensures all patients have equitable access to potentially life-changing clinical trials.
Sarah was one of the first patients to be supported by the newly appointed Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist who joined the team at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh in 2021
