Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. We are fighting cancer on all fronts, finding new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat it to save more lives. We are entirely funded by the public. With your help, we can ensure more people beat cancer.

Katie, Claire and Dan AKA Team Sea to Summit are trekking up Kilimanjaro on 18th - 28th September 2019 to raise money for Cancer Research UK with Charity Challenge.

We are self-funding the trip, meaning all donations go straight to the charity.

At 5,895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the world's highest freestanding mountain and one of the largest volcanoes. This challenge takes us up the beautiful Rongai route and includes:

· Trekking for around 6-8 hours per day.

· Battling the altitude on the mountain up to the summit of
5895m, gaining 1000 feet in altitude on summit day.

· Arising before dawn and trekking through the night on summit
day.

· Experiencing nightly temperatures of down to -15
degrees.

· Sleeping in a tent for 6 nights

Setting off on September 18th, on what would have been our Dad's 70th birthday, we face the challenge of reaching the peak, Uhuru in his memory, and to honour those lost, all who are fighting and those surviving. Cancer Research UK is our charity of choice as it has affected us all.

Our training is going well and includes Cancer Research Race for Life – Pretty Muddy, Tough Mudder, Bristol 10k, Tywardreth Trotter (a 7 mile trail run), The White RAT (an 11 mile trail run), Cornish Coastal path hikes, trail runs, the gym, Parkrun and hiking the mountains of England, Scotland and Wales. Plenty of mud, sweat and ...well, signing up to more!!

1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetime. This, we know,
is not just a statistic, it is an unfair reality we have faced again more
recently with close family and friends.

From https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/:

There are more than 200 different types of cancer. We're the only charity to fund research into all 200 types of cancer. Thanks to supporters like you, our pioneering work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has helped save millions of lives. Over the past 40 years survival has doubled, thanks to the great progress research has made. In the 1970s just 1 in 4 people survived their disease for 10 years or more. Today 2 in 4 survive. Our ambition is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 patients surviving the disease by 2034.

We’re focusing our efforts in four key areas – working to help prevent cancer, diagnose it earlier, develop new treatments and optimise current treatments by personalising them and making them even more effective. We’ll continue to support research into all types of cancer and
across all age groups. And we’re keeping our focus on understanding the biology of cancer so we can use this vital knowledge to save more lives. We’re developing new tests, surgery and radiotherapy techniques, and cancer drugs. We want to personalise prevention, screening and treatment and bring benefits to patients sooner.

Please donate now and together we can save more lives by beating cancer sooner.

Thank you so much for your support and sponsorship.
