Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page which was set up when Sephie ran the Great North Run in September 2018.
Our eldest son Joe (23) was diagnosed with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma at the end of his first year at Lancaster University in July 2015. Fibrolamellar is an ultra-rare form of liver cancer which affects adolescents and young adults with no history of liver disease.
In August 2015 Joe had surgery to remove the tumour and was able to get back to Lancaster for the start of his second year In October 2015. But in July 2016 we found out that the cancer had recurred and was not curable.
Joe died on 23 February 2019 at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds.
Joe received palliative treatment at St James's University Hospital in Leeds and we are lucky that St James's has a Teenage Cancer Trust Young Adult Unit where experts in teenage cancer provide care in a setting designed for young people.
Joe was supported by Jes, a dedicated Nurse Specialist, funded by Teenage Cancer Trust - who remains a point of contact for us. We are so grateful to Teenage Cancer Trust for helping Joe and giving him access to the kind of support which isn't funded by the NHS.
We would like any donations in memory of Joe to go to Teenage Cancer Trust.
