Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Our Dad was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in January 2016 after having symptoms for just a few weeks. Two months later he died.
He was fortunate enough to enjoy Christmas with family in India, attend his daughter's wedding and celebrate his 31st wedding anniversary - all just days before receiving the bad news. Little did we know 2015 would be our last full year with Dad.
Sadly, Dad's story is not unique. 8,800 people are diagnosed with the condition each year in the UK. Pancreatic cancer is unusually aggressive, notoriously difficult to diagnose and typically presents at a late stage when surgery is no longer possible. Pancreatic cancer has appalling rates of survival in comparison to other types of cancer. For example:
- Forty years ago few children survived leukemia. Now survival is 80%.
- Forty years ago 46% of woman survived breast cancer. Now 80% survive at five years.
- Forty years ago 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survived five years. That figure is still 3%.
Despite its high death rate, pancreatic cancer receives just 1% of research funding from major funding bodies!
Dad's diagnosis has made us realise far more research is needed into pancreatic cancer.
Please help fund research that can save more lives.
