Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

On the 26th of April 2009 I will be running my first Flora London Marathon. Running 26.2 miles (that will probably be over 4 hours of running for me) will be the biggest and toughest challenge I've ever had to face.

I will be running in aid of Crusaid, a fantastic charity that supports people living with HIV and AIDS in both the UK and in Africa. It is estimated that AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in recorded history. Did you know that:

In the UK

More than 80,000 people are living with HIV.
1 in 3 people with HIV are undiagnosed.

Worldwide
33.2 million people are living with HIV.
2.5 million are children under 15.

And the numbers are still increasing. Crusaid improves the lives of people affected by HIV and AIDS by:

- Helping people struggling with poverty in the UK through the Crusaid Hardship Fund (which has helped as many as 1 in 3 people in the UK with HIV)

- Funding information, education projects and services that help people living with HIV through their UK projects

- Making grants to organisations providing life-saving treatment, education and support through their African projects

- And funding the search for better treatments through research

I would be extremely grateful if you would sponsor me and help me raise money for such a great cause, no matter how small. Any amount will be appreciated. This is how your money could help:

£10 could pay for a family to be transported from a highly rural area in South Africa to see a doctor and receive medication for infections which threaten their HIV health

£15 could pay for a personal carer to help someone who is very ill with HIV with washing, cooking and other basic tasks that they could not manage on their own

£20 could provide 4 HIV tests in South Africa and allow Crusaid’s team of nurses to help the family understand and respond to the outcome

£25 could help to save the lives of young people in Africa by providing community leaders with HIV prevention training packs and fund one-to-one training sessions

£40 could provide one family in Benoni, South Africa with practical and emotional help for a year, including transport to hospital, nursing care, counselling and essential food and school books

£75 could feed 30 orphans and vulnerable children for a week, providing a hot nutritious meal as well as a sustenance pack to take home to their caregiver

£100 could help prevent treatment failure for someone who is living in poverty and unable to store their antiretroviral drugs at the correct temperature by providing a fridge/freezer

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Crusaid gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thanks so much for your support!
Shun-Kai
