"Today, we still have a choice. We can be the founders of a global movement that changed our relationship with the planet. Or we can be the generation that had its chance and failed to act. The choice is ours." —World Wildlife Foundation 2018
Hi friends! I'm fundraising for a non-for-profit organization called Rainforest Concern. Your support would mean the world to me, and is real-time contribution to rainforest conservation efforts. Through Rainforest Concern's acreage program, every £50 raised goes towards the purchase and protection of an acre of rainforest.
But why Rainforest Concern?
Because we're dependent on the rainforests for everything!
Not only is deforestation putting on estimate 137 species extinct every day, it is also a major cause of climate change, putting more CO2 into the atmosphere than all of the world’s transport combined. The world had a bit of a wake up call from the report released by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change this past October. In it, climate change scientists warned that global warming needed to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will be cause of massive catastrophe in way of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.
This basically sent the world a memo along the lines of.... the world will be in a catastrophic state in 12 years if we don't reduce greenhouse gas emissions (eliminating fossil fuels, and eliminating deforestation and forest degradation). These 12 years need to be spent advocating for government-scale clean energy movements and rainforest conservation efforts. I would guess that this isn't something we all think about on the daily, but it needs our attention.
20% of the Amazon has disappeared since the 1970's. The current political agenda in Brazil is a matter of extreme concern globally as it is threatening to open the Amazon rainforest to agribusiness and cause more devastation to endangered species, indigenous populations and destroy the rainforest.
Rainforest Concern was established to protect threatened natural habitats, the biodiversity they contain, and the indigenous people who depend on them for their survival.
There are currently 18 conservation projects across Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Romania, Suriname, Costa Rica, Panama, India, Sri Lanka and Uganda, and £50 goes towards the purchase and protection of an acre of rainforest at one of their projects in Ecuador, Chile or Colombia.
