Dalmatian coast charity cycle ride · 14 May 2009

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

Thank you.

To everyone who sponsored the boys on this trip. Your generosity was a huge boost to them and helped provide extra motivation, particularly when they faced with yet another long uphill stretch.

We are delighted to say that the boys completed the ride and were fortunate to have a relatively problem free journey - apart from one puncture, however, when you consider they cycled approximately 2,400 km between them, that's a pretty good puncture per km rate! It is also a testament to the excellent standard of equipment that Our Man In Croatia - Andro Tartaglia - supplied. Without his help, planning and all-round assistance the boys would have been faced with a far more daunting task. Thank you Andro.

Congratulations to the boys on this excellent achievement.

They all had a great time travelling around this beautiful country, experiencing the amazing scenery, enjoying the warm and friendly hospitality, sampling local culture and at the same time helping other people through their own efforts. Fantastic. Well done again.

On 28th July we are setting off  to Croatia to cycle 600 km along the Dalmatian coast.  The journey will take us through towns, villages, open farm land and around remote hilly islands.  The challenging route  will involve cycling up steep hills reaching heights of over 400 metres above sea level, lugging the bikes on and off ferries in the heat of the day and singing for our supper!  We will  not have a back up vehicle so will carry all our belongings in the panniers.  Nights will be spent in local b&bs and camp sites. We are all more familiar with  the Cheltenham College sports fields than bicycles but are up for the challenge. We plan to hit the gym after exams and learn a bit of basic bicycle maintenance, like how to repair a puncture or two!

Our chosen charity is the Teenage Cancer Trust.  The trust sets up units which aim to provide teenagers with cancer the best possible medical team, therapy and environment.  There is never a good time to get cancer, but for a teenager the timing seems particularly cruel.  In particular we are supporting the recently launched £1million South West appeal which aims to build a unit in Bristol for 16 -24 year olds.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and safe.  The Teenage Cancer Trust will get donations quickly and if you are a UK taxpayer Justgiving will give 25% in Gift Aid and a further 3% supplement will be added.  Thank you for helping us raise much needed funds for this amazing charity.

We will let you know how we got on!

P.S. A special thank you to our Mr Fix It In Croatia, Andro Tartaglia whose help has been invaluable. http://www.meridien.hr
