Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in West London in 1971. We support thousands of women & children every day, experiencing domestic and sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, stalking, trafficking, prostitution & so-called ‘honour’ based violence.

Story

I can 100% tell you that every single one of you reading this unknowingly knows a victim of abuse. That alone is an appalling, horrendous notion to get your head around. But when you look at the statistics of those victims who actually tell, it becomes a devastating and distressing truth:

  • Every week 2 women are killed by a current or former partner (in England & Wales).
  • 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence at some point in their life time.
  • 750,000 children are affected by domestic violence in England & Wales every year.

These numbers speak for the women and children who speak up. But so many more remain in denial, are frightened, ashamed - and do not say a word.

Abuse does not only affect the victim at the time of violence - mental, emotional or physical. It can, and does, impact on the victim's life for years and years after. And the heart-breaking truth is that most of their friends and family never even realise.

Not enough people talk about abuse. Not enough victims are saved or supported.

In September I am walking 50K for Refuge, a charity that helps women & children escape domestic violence

As some of you know, this is a very personal challenge for me... My hope is that even by you clicking and reading this page will lead to someone, somewhere having the courage to seek support, through an organisation or just by opening up to a friend.

I also hope that you as a friend, relative or colleague, take the time to find out more about domestic abuse and make yourself available to those around you.

Remember, 1 in 4.
