Great North Run 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

UPDATE: Smashed the GNR (by smashed I mean did it in under 3 hours). Now I am about to smash the Great South Run too. Please give if you can.

I'm running the Great North Run on Sunday 12th September to raise money for prostate cancer UK.

WHY?

I am a consultant pathologist and on a weekly basis I diagnose multiple cases of prostate cancer and I regularly attend multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss management of prostate cancer patients. It's a common disease and can have significant repercussions. Here's some facts about prostate cancer in the UK:

  • Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.
  • More than 47,500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year – that's 129 men every day.
  • Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 11,500 men every year.
  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • Around 400,000 men are living with and after prostate cancer.
HOW?

I did it a couple of years ago and managed not to die even though I was a couple of stone heavier and didn't train as much as I wanted due to injury. This time I have remained fit and I'm raring to go. Of course due to multiple previous surgeries on my legs I could collapse like the England cricket team's batting line-up so there's loads of possible fun ahead.

AIM?

I'm a competitive sort and very much of the opinion that if you are going to bother to enter something you have to have the mindset you can win. I challenged Mo Farah last time but I didn't manage to beat him. I found out later that they let him and the other elite athletes start before me! That's cheating! No wonder he beat me. I reckon he might chicken out this time.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Please donate generously to this cause. I was meant to run this last year and had no intention of begging for donations, I was planning a whole load of amazing comedy nights to raise money instead. Needless to say covid put paid to those plans and the race itself.
