Hello everyone,
Thanks for visiting our Justgiving page. On 8th September 2011, we're flying out to Tanzania to join a team of 18 other participants and helping them to 'conquer cancer' by conquering one of the world's highest mountains, Mount Kilimanjaro.
We're taking part in the trek to raise funds for AICR (Association for International Cancer Research), a charity that we both work for.
Our charity strapline is 'Cancer knows no boundaries. Fortunately, neither do we.' Simply put, this means that we fund any type of cancer, anywhere in the world. AICR is the world's leading international cancer research charity and is currently funding 191 research projects in 21 countries around the world. Since its inception in 1979, AICR has spent more than £142 million on cancer research projects around the world. Not bad for a charity that only has 24 members of staff...
Why are we taking part?
Every day, we both get the opportunity to meet and speak to those who have been affected by cancer in the past and those whose lives are still being affected by it today. Although survival rates are better than ever and cancer is now a liveable disease instead of a death sentence, it's not always a happy ending and there's still lots of work to be done.
Where does your money go?
All of our trek costs have already been covered, so every penny we raise will go towards cancer research. We've set ourselves a sponsorship target of £4000. Here are some examples of where your money will go...
£15 - allows a scientist to measure the activity of a cancer gene
£25 - allows a scientist to grow cancer cells in the laboratory for a week
£50 - allows a scientist to measure how fast cancer cells spread
£100 - allows a scientist to use a high-powered microscope for a day
£200 - allows a scientist to analyse the cells in a tumour sample
£300 - allows a scientist to determine the sequence of a cancer gene
