On Easter day April 11th 1982 my beautiful and brave sister Helen 'Pipy' died aged 11 from Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Helen and I used to go swimming at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre most weekends and on one Sunday she found she had difficulty breathing having to take big gulps of air. Her journey from diagnosis of Cancer through to her death was extremely quick as she moved from The Royal Marsden to Great Ormond street where after two weeks in intensive care the doctors turned off her life-support machine and she took her last breaths by herself.
The care and dedication of all the nurses and doctors at Great Ormond Street was fantastic, they couldnt have done more for Helen and for all our family. Helen made it clear that she wanted money raised for a bed with a plaque attached saying 'Get Well from Helen!', a bed that another child would be able to actually walk away from in full health.
I have always wanted to raise money for Great Ormond Street and having secured a place for this years London Marathon it was the perfect opportunity to do so. My training has only properly started at the beginning of February due to my last minute approach at everything, coupled with a virus, but I'm now feeling ready to tackle the challenge following a quick succession of long runs.
Knowing that I am raising money on the day for such a great charity on Helens behalf will really help me through the 26.2 miles when the going gets tough!
So please sponsor me - no matter how small the donation - I will really appreciate the support.
Thankyou x
