Story

Walmer Lifeboat Crew & Families are taking on a 24 hour endurance event of Cycling, Rowing & Running in a bid to raise lifesaving funds for the Intensive Therapy Unit - Kent & Canterbury Hospital.

Walmer Lifeboat Station, Deputy Launch Authority, Steve Milne Has been in ITU at Kent and Canterbury Hospital for over 100 days with the debilitating Guillian-Barre Syndrome. GBS is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system, causing temporary paralysis.

Steve was struck down with this just weeks after finishing a gruelling schedule of stem cell transplant and chemotherapy for Myeloma, which is a from of blood cancer. Whilst Steve prepares for many months of recovery he still requires and a mechanical ventilator.

For a number of years Steve has been heavily involved at Walmer Lifeboat Station in his role as DLA, standing side by side with crew during their best and worst call outs. Regardless of the time or season, Steve would be there. In return the Walmer Crew and families wanted to show Steve and the amazing team at the Intensive Therapy Unit their support by taking on a 24 hour endurance of Cycling, Running and Rowing.

Steve has always been an active person, as a youngster, Rugby, Rowing and Running were his passion. After retiring from 43 years working for the NHS, he was never far from his road bike, and even went back to rowing competitively. Being so fit, strong and determined, is helping him fight these two devastating diseases.

Please dig deep, and offer your support as well to the ITU - Kent and Canterbury!
