Hi
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.
When?
On October 1st, Katherine and I will attempt our first ever half marathon - the Great North Run. Our aim is simply to make as much money as possible for the British Lung Foundation.
How?
Katherine and I have been training every week since October 2005.
Why?
My mum has Emphysema, a form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This means that "the air sacs in her lungs are losing their elasticity. This reduces the support of the airways, causing them to narrow" (http://www.britishlungfoundation.org/copd.asp?dis=14), which means that after even the smallest amount of exertion (walking upstairs or even a slight incline) she is out of breath. At the moment there is nothing that can be done for her and it's really distressing listening to her gasp for breath.
The Hard Facts
One person in seven is affected by lung disease in the UK.
More people consult their GP for respiratory problems than any other group of diseases
Every day around 400 people are diagnosed with lung disease
40,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year
Lung cancer is now the biggest killer in the UK
The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity specialising in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of all lung disease.
