Three Peak Challenge 2009 · 1 January 2009
We are climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike & Snowdon in 24 hours – theThreePeaksChallenge – to raise money for the hospice, which cared for my father in the last months of his life. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far, I have been blown away by your generosity & support.
When my father, Dai Llewellyn, was diagnosed with prostate cancer last summer, we had no idea that he would have less than six months to live. By November, it was clear there was nothing they could do, the cancer had spread to his bones and was terminal. My sister Olivia was caring for Dad almost full-time, and the strain of his illness was hard to bear for all of us. The Hospice in the Weald stepped in to provide Dad with the most wonderful care we could have wished for and their support throughout painful treatments and sleepless nights was invaluable. It was the Hospice that allowed Dad dignity in a world of needles and medical examinations, and enabled Olivia and I to love him as daughters rather than carers in the last few months of his life. He died peacefully on 13th January 2009.
In December, a group of us decided to do the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of this wonderful hospice. On June 13th/14th 2009 Lilly, Tanya, Arabella, Kate and Amy will scale the highest mountains in (Scafell Pike: 978m), (Ben Nevis: 1344m) & (Snowdon: 1085m) – all in the space of 24 hours. Our support team: Susannah, Simon and Vanessa, will also drive the 450 miles transporting us between the peaks. Completing the Three Peaks Challenge is no mean feat, it will be a mentally and physically demanding 24 hours, which we are determined to complete particularly because we are raising money for such a great cause.
The hospice provides specialist palliative care advice and clinical support for people with life limiting illness, their family and the bereaved. It is based in Pembury and serves a community of approximately 300,000 over an area of 400 square miles of West Kent andEast Sussex. It does not charge for its services, it has charity status and is dependent on the community to fund its essential work – its Government funding is only around half that afforded to other adult hospices.
