Story

On the 16th July 2009 Carter Whitlam was born his life lay in the hands of the amazing surgeons, doctors and nurses at The Sheffield Childrens Hospital, his chance of survial was 60% not great but still manageable!!!  At home 8 wks later, he was doing well no sign of his terrible start to life only a small scar over his belly.

Then on the 10th December Carter became ill and the lives of his family and friends would become unthinkable for the 6 months that followed.  Carter suffered a perferated bowel 1 in million chance of happening after his earlier problems.  The next 24 hours went by and the Intensive Care staff where struggling to keep him alive, After Carters heart stopped twice the doctors and nurses prepared his family for the worst and were making arrangements for them to spend there last moments together.  'One last thing to try' says the consultant but don't get your hopes up, it's doubtful it will work.  But as if by magic, things started to improve just slowly but things were better.  Carter then went back to theatre on the 23rd December as the surgeons were worried his bowel which was sat on his stomach was dying and they needed to save as much as they could.

Christmas day Carter sat up in a chair and watched his 4 year old sister play with her presents.  Amazing is the only word that could be used.  A christmas miricle said staff at the hospital.  With what he's been through he shouldn't be here said another.

The follwoing months passed and Carter moved from High Dependancy to ward S1.  He kept the staff on there toes and made a handfull of trips back down to intensive care with one infection after another.

His surgeon said that he was determind that Carter would watch the world cup at home and he didn't let us down.

Since then Carter has grown from strength to strength!!!  from eating food, to sitting, to crawling to walking and now starting to babble.

Carter still has to go to hospital when he become ill with infections as his lung can't cope and he becomes tired and the visits to check up's but other than that he's now a normal toddler and to look at him you'd never know a thing.

His family and friends will never be able to repay the hospital for what they have done, for him and his family but we can help them save more lives, give someone else's family hope there child will survive!!!
