Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) is extending the traditional Sport Relief weekend of activities to a week – and hoping to raise £1,000 for charity in the process.
While the ‘Team DCLT’ Sport Relief weekend will run from March 21 to March 23, alongside national events all over the country, Trust staff will not be hanging up their trainers and tracksuits too soon as they are dedicating three days of the following week to a Coast to Coast cycle challenge.
Five employees - including chief executive Michael Hart will use pedal power to travel 170 miles from Morecambe to Bridlington between Wednesday March 26 and Friday March 28.
Ahead of the cycling feat, the five will be joined by other DCLT employees, as well as trust members and customers, for activities in aid of Sport Relief the previous weekend, with events kicking off on Friday March 21 with a relay race of multiple teams. Beginning at Askern Leisure Centre, the relay will see teams competing across 13 legs of varying distance from one to eight miles, and take in venues in areas including Dearne Valley, Edlington and Balby, before ending at Thorne Leisure Centre.
The following day an event at Rossington Leisure Centre will challenge individuals, or teams of up to five people, to take the plunge and participate in a 1.5km or 5km swim. And after Saturday’s swimathon, the weekend will finish with the Sport Relief Mile, at Balby Carr Academy on March 23, which will be open to all ages and abilities.
DCLT chief executive Michael Hart said: “Sport Relief is a great cause and we as a Trust relish the opportunity to help raise funds and try to reach our target of £1,000, while encouraging more people to get involved with running, swimming and cycling.
“All of the events promise a great, active weekend where we can raise money for and awareness of Sport Relief and the causes it supports before we then get on our bikes –literally! – to take on the cycling challenge.”
Sport Relief is a national fundraising event affiliated with Comic Relief which aims to help people get active and raise life-changing cash for charitable causes across the UK.
