Story

I’m climbing Ben Nevis (the shielding way). Climbing the stairs in my house, to arrive at the summit height of Ben Nevis.

I have a chronic rare blood cancer PV, which is a Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN). MPN voice have helped me personally over the years. I thank my daughter Ally for the motivation to attempt this challenge.

Before this pandemic, my training had progressed as planned. I had a large support group organised to helping me climb Ben Nevis in May – obviously due to the restrictions, in Scotland, this is no longer possible.

Climbing Ben Nevis was always intended as my last Munro. Fatigue is a huge issue with PV leading to an acceptance that completing the Munro bagging is now not a practical a challenge. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK, the summit is 1,345 metres. I am climbing Ben Nevis (the shielding way). This challenge might take me 26 hours or 26 days, totally dependent on managing my fatigue. To reach this height I will have to climb up the 3 flights of house stairs 259 times.

Save the UK's Charities

General fundraising has been hit very hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of fundraising events have been cancelled and many charities, particularly smaller ones, are struggling to maintain services because of this huge reduction in income.

This impacts all sectors of society from children to the elderly as well as the vital work in areas such as palliative care, serious diseases, mental health, housing support, food supplies and countless others that charities support.

About the charity

MPN Voice leads the way in supporting people with rare blood cancers called Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), with accurate information and emotional support. We're funding research toward better treatments and one day a cure. Most importantly we offer hope to those affected by MPNs.
