Story

Ricky and Dave from the Management team at Golden Sands Holiday Park in Rhyl, North Wales have set themselves a challenge of a lifetime to do a 16 day trek to Everest Base camp with Action Challenge UK. They are both very passionate about raising money for their chosen charities which are Alder Hey Children's Hospital and The Stroke Association.

Ricky's Charity is Alder Hey Children's hospital, one of the busiest children's hospitals in Europe which see's over 270,000 children each year and is very close to his heart. He is doing it in memory of Aunty Joan who was an avid fundraiser for the charity since 1998 when they treated her son for Angiofibroma (a benign tumour that tends to bleed and occurs in the nasopharynx of prepubertal and adolescent males) and raised money at every opportunity until she sadly passed away last year

Dave's Charity is The Stroke Association and is very close to his heart after the sad passing of his beloved mum Brenda in 2016. The Stroke association played a vital role in caring for Brenda, especially when she lost her speech, they helped her to communicate with them and the family.

Both Charities are fantastic and any donations are very much appreciated!

The Challenge

Standing at a formidable 18,192 ft the summit of Mount Everest offers the perfect backdrop for this almighty 16 day challenge. They fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and from Lukla climbers trek upward to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, 3,440 metres (11,290 ft), following the valley of the Dudh Kosi river. It takes about two days to reach the village, which is a central hub of the area. Typically at this point, climbers allow a day of rest for acclimatization. They then trek another two days to Dingboche, 4,260 metres (13,980 ft) before resting for another day for further acclimatization. Another two days takes them to Everest Base Camp via Gorakshep, the flat field below Kala Patthar, 5,545 metres (18,192 ft) and Mt. Pumori.
