Story
In August 2020, my then 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with LCH (Langerhans Cell Hystiocytosis). This is a rare disease found mainly in children and is treated with a course of chemotherapy and steroids. My daughter, Sophie, became a patient of The Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Childrens oncology/haematology departments where she began her treatment. This course of treatment plus many MRI scans involved lots of regular visits to the hospital, as well as some inpatient spells.
On 17th August 2021, Sophie received her final treatment and got to 'ring the bell'. This bell signifies getting the all clear. Sophie will remain an outpatient until she is 18 while receiving regular MRI scans and checkups.
I have chosen these two charities as these are who we had direct involvement with. The Childrens Cancer Unit Charity who are there to support the current unit and staff while trying to fund a dedicated Haematology and Oncology Unit in the new childrens hospital. The Cancer Fund for Children who own Daisy Lodge in Newcastle Co.Down which provides breaks for patients and their families to help them unwind from the pressures of being a cancer patient. Daisy Lodge also provides a residential program for young persons to help provide them with coping mechanisms.
I would like to keep both charities as even as possible so when donating, unless you have a preference, please donate to whichever has lowest amount of donations.
Thank you
