Story

Mont Blanc Step Challenge

The highest mountain in Western Europe .

I want to challenge myself during the 3 week extension to the lockdown, as so many fantastic people have already achieved great things during the lockdown and raised lots of money for the NHS and other charities.

I am in the process of climbing the height of Mont Blanc, which is a mountain in the Alps that is on the French and Italian border. It is the highest mountain in Western Europe. I started to do some calculations and got my Dad to help me with this. I measured the steps and did a number of calculations to work out how many steps I would need to climb, how many times I would have to climb the three flights of stairs, there are 42 steps and how many days I would to be climbing for.

I am in the process of climbing 2000ft (610m) for 7 days and then on the 8th day, which will be the final day, I will be climbing 1,781ft (543m). It will be a challenge, especially as I won’t have the beautiful scenic views and I will just keep seeing the stairs. The Shard in London is 1,016ft (310m) high, the tallest completed habitable building in the United Kingdom, so I will be climbing up the Shard nearly twice each day! I will be walking down 2000ft each day as well, but that won’t count!! It’s funny, as my Dad reminded me of the first ever fell/hill/mountain I climbed with him, which was Pen-y-ghent, in the Yorkshire Dales. I was only 7 years old at the time and it was during the summer holidays. The height of Pen-y-ghent is, 2,277ft (694m). I will be raising money for 3 charities, as there are a number of charities that I want to raise money for, especially with everything that is going on during this very difficult time. The 3 charities are:

NHS Together

Age UK

Mind

Here are some of the figures for the climb:

HEIGHT OF MONT BLANC: 15,781ft (4,810m)

TOTAL NUMBER OF STEPS: 27,023 steps

NUMBER OF TIMES CLIMBING UP THE STAIRS: 644 times

NUMBER OF DAYS: 8 days

STEPS PER DAY: 3,425 steps each day for 7 days, (2000ft, 610m)

3,048 steps on the final day, (1,781ft, 543m)

NUMBER OF TIMES CLIMBING UP THE STAIRS PER DAY: 82 times each day for 7 days

73 times on the last day (8th day)
