Astro Night Without Light Sponsored Walk

Raising money for SolarAid

When the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people without electricity. At the flick of a switch, lives can be instantly changed with a solar light. SolarAid wants to make real, sustainable change happen.

Story

SolarAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to clean, renewable, energy. Nearly 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to electricity. This forces people across the continent to cut their day short at around 6pm, with many relying on expensive, toxic and dangerous lighting sources such as candles and kerosene lamps.

SolarAid's mission is to light up every home, school and clinic in Africa by 2030, using safe, clean, solar power.

To support this important mission, we at Astro have challenged ourselves to complete a 15 mile walk in (partial) darkness* on Saturday 22nd October. We will travel the route of the Lea Valley walk, from Waltham Abbey, finishing in Canary Wharf. Much of the walk takes place along unlit towpaths. Fortunately we'll have our solar lights to keep us on the right track. Towards the end of the walk, illumination from street lights will be unavoidable: another reminder of the light inequality we seek to address.

Please consider supporting us: a contribution of any size can change lives.
