Story
For the second year in a row, volunteers from Birketts are taking part in The Big Half to raise vital funds for EGLAC, ensuring more people in South East London have access to legal advice when they need it most.
EGLAC
The lack of availability of legal aid, combined with the ongoing cost of living crisis, has led to a huge increase in the number of people unable to access legal advice when they need it.
With the invaluable help of volunteer lawyers and others, EGLAC provides advice on a wide range of legal issues. Clients in South East London receive free legal advice on matters such as family, housing, employment, immigration and civil litigation. The difference this service can make to people with nowhere else to turn is summed up in this feedback from a client:
Going through a tribunal unrepresented is a daunting and stressful experience, especially with sickness, disabilities and other health problems arising from grievances. But the legal adviser really helped me understand particular parts of the process and boosted my morale by making me feel capable when I was at my lowest or feeling most defeated. This is an invaluable service and I am so grateful to have been able to benefit from it.
