Story

Grace's story

In 2008 my mum was diagnosed with cancer (Breast and lymphoma). At the time I had just turned 16 and did not quite understand the process or what would happen. All I wanted to know and my 4 older brothers was, is she going to die, we relentlessly asked her. But little did I know, I would become her companion and carer throughout the process.

Fast forward 3 years and my mum had finished her treatment, had part of her breast tissue removed, lymph nodes, lost all her hair, which would never come back and had been placed into remission (only for a short while)

In 2012 my mum was diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer and the shockwave was unreal.

When we hear about cancer and the word it tends to send a shiver down our spine, we almost search every corner of the earth looking for a cure, my mum did just that. But on this occasion her diagnosis swiftly moved to stage 4 and as we all know this is the most devastating news we could receive.

In March of 2014 I visited my mum and dad back in Wales and at the time she was in hospital for an infection. By this point she hadn't received anymore chemo as her body couldn't tolerate anymore, however she had received radiation therapy which had caused significant burns to her lower back. Her cancer had spread to her thigh bones, 2 points on her spine and tibia bones and her liver. We were fast tracked through the St David's hospice which provides end of life care for those with a terminal illness, very much like the Dougie Mac. But I decided my mum would prefer to be at home, to which we brought her home, nursed and cared for her until she sadly passed away on the 18th of April 2014 surrounded by all of her immediate family aged 65. At the time I was 22, now 30. I am doing the Dougie mac midnight walk in remembrance of my mum, I always said I would take part in a fundraiser walk for her and I am. This time with my family.

So please donate so families across Stoke and Staffordshire can receive vital support from those at Dougie Mac, who also support those in the community. Every penny counts.

Thank you
