The Great North Run is the world’s biggest half marathon, with more than 57,000 runners pounding the streets of Newcastle. The 13.1-mile course runs from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields and attracts many world-class athletes.

Story

On September 7th Dora and Orla will be attempting to run the Great North Run, this is 13.1 miles (21km) of blood sweat and tears.

With Orla recovering from an ACL injury and Dora having refused up till now to ever become a runner, we signed up to this race driven by a desire to challenge ourselves while raising funds for the remarkable charity CRY.

Every week in the UK, at least 12 seemingly fit and healthy young people lose their lives to undiagnosed cardiac conditions. In March 2023, we experienced the heartbreaking loss of a very close friend and fellow medical student, Umayr, due to an unknown heart problem. We are honoured to have the opportunity this year to run in his memory; an attempt to help CRY make a difference in people's lives, just as he made a difference to ours.

Umayr was an exceptionally special person in our lives and we miss him tremendously (especially his biriyani!!). Any donation, no matter how small, or share of this page will have a significant impact and be really appreciated. With your generosity, CRY can work towards reducing the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by collaborating with cardiologists and family doctors to establish best practices and appropriate screening facilities that promote and protect the cardiac health of our youth. By supporting CRY, you are playing a vital role in saving young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions. To see how your support can make a difference, please visit www.c-r-y.org.uk
