Event: TRIBE Relay Across Scotland 2022, from 24 June 2022 to 25 June 2022
Taking place over Summer Solstice, we will relay through the day into the night. We will push the limits of human endurance and run 220km, in teams of 4 or 8, in 24 hours to fight modern slavery.

Story

TRIBE Freedom Foundation is on a mission to fight modern slavery and end human trafficking. They work by raising awareness of trafficking, supporting survivors and enabling frontline projects to prevent modern slavery. They empower communities to create an impact.

There are an estimated 40.3 million victims of slavery globally and 136,000 people living in slavery in the UK. That's more than two victims for every thousand people in the country. This needs to stop.

About our team:

Kumiko is a research associate in Earnshaw’s Lab at WCB. Last August, she organised the first team run from Dundee to Edinburgh (161 km) with three female runners from the department, they started at 6am and finish after 9 pm. It was tough but memorable experience for her. This year she will challenge herself further with three lovely women (Thanks Toni for joining again). She is glad to be able to recover from her thigh injury in time and will be really grateful if you could support us again.

Marie is a 4th year PhD student in the Fry lab. She’s from the Alps and has always loved spending time outdoors, hiking, climbing, or running. She’s super excited about her first relay race through the night! She will then go on to run the Ring of Steall in September, a very exciting and terrifying challenge.

Steph has joined the team last minute as a replacement. She ran a marathon in 2016 then didn't run a step for years (!) although she has always loved hillwalking. She started hill running in January and now trains sporadically in the pentlands. She feels excited about madcap schemes and apprehensive about tarmac.

Toni is a postdoc in the Welburn Lab and works in the WCB microscopy facility. She was a last minute recruit for last years team run and enjoyed it so much she was keen to join Kumiko for another team relay this year. Running through the night is going to be an additional challenge but it looks like a really interesting route.
