Raising money for The Frederick Foundation
In memory of Dr Frederick Esiri

Oxford Half Marathon 2026 · 11 October 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

We aim to support the acute stroke unit at Ibadan, Nigeria, and to create academic links between Ibadan and Oxford medical schools for mutual benefit in stroke rehabilitation and prevention, service and research. Together let's make a lasting impact on Stroke Care and Research in Africa.

Story

We excited to inform you we have runners at the Oxford Half Marathon running to raise funds for the Frederick Foundation, which was founded by Emeritus Professor Margaret Esiri, in memory of her late husband Dr Frederick Esiri. Dr Frederick died in the months after he suffered a stroke in his home country of Nigeria. He devoted much of his life to improving medical care for those who could not afford it in Nigeria.

The Frederick Foundation continues his legacy by supporting the development and maintenance of a high-standard Acute Stroke Unit at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, Nigeria. It is also creating and fostering an educational and research link related to stroke and clinical neuroscience between the medical schools at Ibadan and Oxford. We are participating in this marathon to help the Frederick Foundation raise funds to achieve its aims.
