Fundraising for a New Women's 4+
At GCBC, it has been our aim to buy a new women's 4+ for a while. This would be beneficial for a few key reasons:
1) A new women's 4+ that is fit for rigorous use would make our women's squad more competitive.
2) Our current women's second 4+ does not get used very often due to its ageing nature. A new boat would allow more women to be training and racing at any one time.
3) Our men's first 4+ is much more fit for use. We want to eliminate this disparity by obtaining a women's 4+ of similar quality.
Ultimately, our main aim is to support women in rowing. We want GCBC to be a place where anyone can prosper and strengthen their rowing, regardless of which squad they are in. To achieve this aim, the entire club is going to take on the challenging task of a 24 hour ergathon to fundraise money for a new women's 4+. Our women's squad have already had some great successes this year and in previous years (see below for more details). Please spread the word, keep an eye on social media for updates and donate to this fantastic cause!
The Women's Squad in 2024/25...
This academic year (2024/25) has seen the women's squad take part in a number of events:
1) Senate Cup where our women's first 4+ came top 4 women's crews
2) Durham Autumn Small Boats Head where our women's 4+ came 4th in their band
3) Rutherford Head where our women's eight finished as the top college crew in their band
4) Novice Cup where two women's novice crews powered their way on the erg
5) Tyne New Years Head where our women's 4+ finished as the top women's college 4+ and our women's eight got some great training for WEHORR
6) Durham Small Boats Head where we had a three (!!) women's 4+'s and an alumni double take part
7) Novice Head where our women's novice 4+ finished 5th out of 20 crews
8) Women's Eight's Head of the River Race where our women's eight showed off their rowing prowess on the Thames. Unfortunately, last year's WEHORR was cancelled and the year before that we sent a composite crew.
The academic year is not over, and in summer the women's squad looks forward to regatta seasons including Durham City Regatta, Hexham Regatta, Durham Regatta and more!
