Story

Julie, Matthew and Lydia are running the Great North Run 2022 to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation in memory of Andrew Sinclair, husband and dad.

Andrew died of metastatic cancer in 2013, aged 55, having received oncological treatment at the Royal Freeman Hospital under the care of Dr Rhona McMenemin for over 4 years.

Andrew was a huge fan of NUFC and would have loved to support the wonderful causes that the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation helps support. Our family have decided that we will (finally!) don our running trainers and train for our first (Julie and Lydia) and fastest (Matthew?!) half marathon to raise money for this fantastic cause in Andrew's memory.

Andrew was always partial to a spot of DIY, with the family always joking that his motto should be 'If it ain't broke, it is now!' Now it's time for some revenge as we start training and applying this motto to our thermoregulation and toenails!

But that's enough about us, here is some information about the wonderful cause we are supporting!

Sir Bobby Robson launched his Foundation to help find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer, after a request for help from his oncologist Professor Ruth Plummer. She was treating Sir Bobby as he faced cancer for the fifth and what he knew would be the final time.

She needed to raise £500,000 to equip a new cancer drug trials centre at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle upon Tyne and asked him if he knew anyone who might like to donate.

Sir Bobby responded by launching a charity to get the money she needed. He described it as like being at the helm of a team again. What he called his last and greatest team.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to read about our story and for supporting this fantastic cause!
