Story
Thanks to all who donated. Here's how the day went down. Eight hikers in 5 vehicles arrived at Cross F parking. Two vehicles took us to Mormon Grove Access and parked there. All eight of us hiked the 5 miles from Mormon Grove to Cross F. Spectacular scenery, temperature was perfect and there was cloud cover most of the way. Flowers (and bees) were much in evidence. Fortunately, a friend had hiked this section a week ago and warned us that the recent rains had caused much of the undergrowth to go wild. Along the way, as we headed south, there was brush with nasty stickers that grabbed at our arms and legs. Most of us had heeded the warning and wore long pants and long sleeves. Still, there were snags and scratches. It was planned so the 4 faster hikers could go at their pace and they drove back to Mormon Grove to get their vehicles. The rest of us hiked at our pace. Just as we reached the intersection of Little Saddle Mountain and Sunflower, we met one of the faster group coming up from the parking area. He worked it out to hike the Cross F to Sunflower portion and have his truck left for him at Bushnell Tanks. So, 7 hikers @ 5 miles = 35 miles and 1 hiker @ 10 miles = 10 miles for a total of 45 miles on the AZT on a beautiful day in higher elevation since all of us live in Tempe, Chandler or Phoenix. Therefore, Join in the Fun covered Sections 43A and 43B. It took communication, willingness of drivers to travel the back roads to Mormon Grove and a scouting trip to Mormon Grove access 2 weeks earlier to make a successful, safe trip for all of us.
