In November 2024 (299 short days from now) I will embark on a challenging, extraordinary and potentially life-changing 5 day trek in the Indian Himalayas.
The backstory........
In September 2022, a friend (affectionately known as Bud) was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Her diagnosis truly shook my world, truth be told I'm a fixer, but I couldn't fix this, I was. I watched her go through gruelling treatment but somehow she always cared more about everyone else than herself.
Diagnosed at 40, with no family history, the only symptom was one sharp pain which woke her at night. I'll forever be thankful she sought medical attention, it without doubt saved her life. Giving her husband his wife, her children their mother, her parents their daughter, her family and friends the chance to share their lives with her for as long as possible. Her stregnth through a lumpectomy, mastectomy, 12 sessions of chemotherapy, 15 sessions of radiotherapy, and now a 10 year hormone therapy treatment plan is nothing short of inspirational.
Now it is my turn to give back and do something in her honour. Bud (forever the questionable influence) encouraged me to apply for this trek; I was intending to apply for a much 'easier' fundraiser at which point she said "go big, or go home - Himalayas or nothing".
Bud and her family have been a part of my children's lives, pretty much their entire lives..... in solidarity my son (aged 21) is also taking on the trek. So here I am, very nearly 40, unfit, afraid of heights (and flying), about to embark on a huge challenge all in the hope of raising awareness, funds, and saving lives. So more people get their Bud for longer.
