Story
London to Brighton. Two non-cyclists. One very good cause.
On 13 September, the two of us – Kate and Anja – will be taking on the London to Brighton Bike Ride.
Neither of us are cyclists. In fact, when we first agreed to do this back in January, our training plan was essentially: "It can't be that hard, can it?" We have since learned that 55 miles, several hills and something called Ditchling Beacon may require some serious muscle and determination.
But we're spurred on by a cause that means a great deal to Anja in particular.
In 2024, Anja's four-year-old son, Konrad, was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was rushed by ambulance to King's College Hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery.
Thanks to the extraordinary skill, care and compassion of the medical teams who treated him, Konrad is now doing well. But his recovery, treatment and future are only possible because of decades of research and advances in medicine.
That's why we're raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity. They fund pioneering research into better treatments, supports scientists working to improve outcomes for patients, and provides vital information and support for families facing a diagnosis.
For Anja's family, the charity's brilliant child-friendly resources helped both Konrad and his sister understand what was happening in a way that felt less frightening and overwhelming during an incredibly difficult time.
No child should have to face a brain tumour. And no family should have to go through that journey alone.
So on 13 September we'll be pedalling our way up and down the Sussex hills, fuelled by that, hopefully buns of steel, a killer 90s jungle playlist and the knowledge that every donation will help support the charity's life-changing work.
If you'd like to sponsor us, we'd be hugely grateful. Whether it's the price of a coffee, an overpriced Pret sandwich or something a little larger, it will all help.
Thank you for your support.
