Story
What: Cycling the length of the UK, from Land's End to John O’Groats (1000 miles).
Why: Raising money for Centrepoint, the UK’s leading youth homelessness charity.
When: 4th - 18th July (2 weeks).
As lockdowns come to an end and we are quickly seduced by sunny beer gardens, we want to pause and try to help (with your support!) a group of young people who have been far more drastically affected by the events of the last year than we often take time to appreciate. Like many of you reading this, we find ourselves sick of lockdown days in front of the screen, stuck, never leaving the house, with bellies sagging and motivation at an all-time low. But with over 120,000 young people finding themselves homeless, or at risk of homelessness, each year, our ‘challenging times’ pale in comparison.
Starting on 4th July 2021, we will be cycling the length of the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats over 14 days to raise money for Centrepoint. Growing from an initial suggestion to tackle the famous ‘LEJOG’ route, we have cobbled together a motley crew of flabby but determined students, keen to take on a challenge and help where we can.
More than 70,000 households have been made homeless in the UK since the start of the pandemic, and more young people are being forced out onto the streets due to losing their jobs or the breakdown of family relationships. Tragically, three-quarters of youth homelessness charities expect to see an increase in the numbers of young people sleeping rough in the coming months. Centrepoint works across Britain to help house, educate and support 16-25 year-olds who in so many ways are exactly like us but who lack the basic foundations that we take for granted (and even moan about) each day. We hope that with your generous support and some weary legs (and bums) on our part, together we can generate a meaningful contribution to the Centrepoint cause.
