Raising money for Oxford Hospitals Charity and SeeSaw

Story

I’m a 53-year-old recreational runner — someone who loves a challenge but also likes to think of herself as relatively sensible. So why on earth have I decided to take on one of the toughest foot races on the planet: the Marathon des Sables?

The MdS is a legendary multi-day ultramarathon across the Sahara Desert. Over 250 km (156 miles). Temperatures hitting 50°C. A week of running on sand while carrying everything you need — food, kit, survival essentials — on your back. It’s usually described as “the toughest footrace on Earth,” and frankly… it’s completely bonkers.

So why am I doing it?

Because I want a challenge that scares me a little. Something that pushes me far beyond my comfort zone, tests not only my legs but my resilience, determination, and grit. I want to experience something truly extraordinary — something unforgettable. And that’s exactly what the Marathon des Sables promises.

But I’m not just doing this for myself.

I’m running for two charities that mean a huge amount to me and to the students I work with every day: Oxford Hospitals Charity and Seesaw. I decided on these based particularly on 2 students; Zak and Gethin who I was very lucky to get to teach at The Marlborough School.

Both organisations have supported countless young people and their families through incredibly difficult moments. I fundraised for Seesaw when I ran my very first marathon in 2017, and later joined Jack and Helen to raise money for the Oxford Children’s Hospital during our “Big Gethin Run.” Their impact is real, lasting, and close to home.

So now, as I take on the biggest physical and mental challenge of my life, I’m hoping to give something meaningful back — and I’d be incredibly grateful for your support.

Every donation, no matter the size, fuels both my journey across the desert and the vital work these charities do for children and families in our community.

Thank you so much for helping me take on this wild adventure — and for supporting two amazing causes along the way.
