Story

LISA

On the 27th June, I will be doing a Skydive to raise money for The Royal Marsden, a cause which is close to my heart.

My best mate Sarah works as a Deputy Lead Play Specialist for the Marsden. Every day, she spends time with incredibly brave children who have to endure invasive treatments because of this cruel disease. She has inspired me to get off my bum, and throw myself out of a plane at 10,000 feet - all for a great cause of course!

For anyone who knows me knows I am an adrenaline junkie who is absolutely petrified of heights 😂

SARAH

I’ll be taking on this skydive in memory of 30 incredible children I’ve had the privilege of working closely with in my role as Deputy Lead Play Specialist at The Royal Marsden, as well as for my nan, who is currently receiving palliative care for stage 4 cancer.

Every day, I see first-hand the strength and resilience of children going through cancer treatment. I also see how incredibly tough that journey is physically, emotionally, and for their families too. These children have left a lasting mark on my heart, and this jump is my way of honouring them.

On the day of the skydive, I will be wearing their names on my t-shirt, carrying them with me every step of the way.

I’m also doing this for my nan, who is facing cancer with so much courage. Like so many families, ours will soon experience the reality of what this illness can take away.

I truly believe we can do better. I hope that through continued research, we can find kinder, more effective treatments and ultimately cures so that no child or family has to go through this in the future.

This June I’ll be stepping out of a plane and free falling from 13,000 feet all in support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity as the hospital celebrates 175 years of extraordinary cancer care.

As a play specialist on the paediatric oncology ward, I see every day what this hospital truly means.

It's more than world leading treatment.

Ii’s courage in tiny hands.

It’s bravery in hospital pyjames.

It’s laughter echoing down corridors that have held hope for 175 years.

In 1851, William Marsden founded this hospital with a simple but powerful belief, that people with cancer deserved specialist care and compassion, at a time when few others offered it.

Today, that same compassion lives on in every ward, every family room, every moment we help a child feel safe enough to smile. So this Sky dive feels fitting.

A leap of faith

A rush of fear

A moment of trust.

If William Marsden could see 175 years on, the research, the breakthroughs, the survival stories and the small but mighty patients who inspire us all, I think he would be proud.

I’m jumping to celebrate how far we have come.

I’m jumping for children I work with.

I’m jumping for the families who face the unimaginable with extraordinary strength.

I’m jumping so the next 175 years bring even more hope.
