Story

In April 2024, we are running the London Marathon!

We are raising funds for Spinal Research and also for our friend Will, who suffered a spinal cord injury and stroke, last year.

Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Every year 1,000 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord.

They receive no government funding and rely entirely on the support of the public to raise funds for their research. Because of the efforts of supporters, Spinal Research have funded innovative medical research that has achieved a number of ground breaking changes in the field.

The research is exceptionally important to help advance treatments for other neurological conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Motor Neurone Disease, Strokes and Dementia. We are so excited to be able to help contribute towards the funding of this vital research that continues to improve lives of our loved ones.

In April 2022, our friend Will suffered a spinal cord injury and stroke, affecting his body's strength and control. He spent months on a ventilator in intensive care in London, unable to speak, eat or drink normally or get out of bed, with his Mum moving to London to be by his side. Eventually, Will was able to leave intensive care behind and started some basic rehab with the hospital physios, helping him to practise moving his arms, hands and feet. In March 2023 he moved to a specialist rehab centre closer to home, where he has already made great progress. He has practised standing with physios using specialist equipment, participated in hydrotherapy and enjoyed using a wheelchair to get outdoors with friends when they visit. Will is really motivated to improve as much as he possibly can, and we want to do everything we can to help make things a little lighter.

So… With that being said, we need to raise a total of £3,600 for Spinal Research. We would LOVE to smash this target and hopefully raise more than this, with all of the extra money going into a pot for Will’s recovery and homecoming. This might include continued specialist care and physio input, therapy and equipment to help regain independence in daily life, an adaptive exercise bike, specialist sports equipment, an adaptive home gym, and maybe even cutting-edge technology to potentially help Will re-learn to walk.

We can’t wait for Will to come home and be able to get stuck in to returning to daily life, including regaining his independence, socialising with friends and gradually returning to adapted variations of sports he has always enjoyed, such as biking, skiing and surfing! Every penny will count towards helping Will achieve the best quality of life possible.

We would massively appreciate any donations that you are able to give. Large or small. Even if just the price of your morning coffee - all to go towards an exceptional charity that provide the basis of research for Will’s recovery and his homecoming.

Thank you so much.
