Story

The London Marathon challenge in aid of Brain Research Uk

Our plan is to run 200 MILES from the amazing Heath Hospital in Cardiff, where Megs life was saved, all the way to the start line in Greenwich London.

The plan is to cover the distance in 8-9 days, leaving just enough in the legs to complete the 26.2miles on London marathon day.

Megans story

Megan, aged 30 — wife to Matthew, mother to Sonny, and sister-in-law to Dom — suffered a catastrophic brain bleed caused by two aneurysms, one of which had ruptured.

Following the initial surgery, Megan’s body began to react to the trauma, causing her brain to swell. This led to an emergency craniotomy, during which a large portion of her skull was removed to relieve the pressure and temporarily preserved in her abdomen.

Megan was placed in an induced coma while her brain coped with the trauma. A common complication of this kind of injury is vasospasm, where the blood vessels cramp, reducing blood supply to parts of the brain. Sadly, there is no direct treatment for this — it becomes a waiting game, hoping that as little damage as possible is done.

Thankfully, Megan’s aneurysms were successfully treated and her skull has now been replaced. This outcome is entirely thanks to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at the Heath Hospital.

Her journey, however, is far from over, as Megan now begins the long road to rebuilding her strength and recovery.

We, as a family, have been deeply moved by the support we’ve received — from friends, relatives, and charities that do so much for people like Megan. Now, it’s our turn to give back.

In addition to running for Megan, Dom is also running in memory of his father, Brett, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 64 from an aggressive brain tumour known as a Glioblastoma.

A Glioblastoma diagnosis is devastating: only 25% of people survive beyond one year, and fewer than 5% make it past five years.
