Melanie's Big Wild Cumbrian Hike

Raising money for The Wildlife Trusts

The Wildlife Trusts are here to make the world wilder and make nature part of life, for everyone. More than 850,000 members and 35,000 volunteers work together with their Wildlife Trust to stand up for nature on land and at sea: from mountain tops to the seabed, from hidden valleys to city streets.

Story

Thanks so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

This October I will be hiking over 100km on a 7-day journey through the Lake District to raise money for TWO AMAZING CHARITIES - The Wildlife Trusts and the Beaver Trust, and I want to share with you the magnificence of our countryside and wildlife that we have here in the UK.

I will be supporting the Wildlife Trusts '30 by 30' & 'Big Wild Walk' Campaigns, which aim to get at least 30% of our land and sea connected and protected by 2030.

And also the Beaver Trust, which has become a charity close to my heart since making my Film 'Nature's Engineers' with the Cornwall Beaver Project last year.

Both of these charities have been extremely instrumental in successfully re-introducing the Beaver back to the UK, having been extinct here for hundreds of years.

Beavers really are nature's very own engineers - they are a keystone species that build series of dams that filter out pollutants, reduce flooding, store water in pools for times of drought, and attract a huge host of other wildlife.

Throughout my life and in particular in recent years, nature has really been there for me as I’m sure it has for a lot of you, especially during the lockdown period – it’s certainly something that has kept me sane!

In wake of the recent news and the UN report that we, as a world, have FAILED to meet a single target over the last decade, to stop the destruction of nature, I am calling on you to ‘help nature out!’

Unfortunately, in recent years, the UK has become one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. To build developments, industries and new transport links, and dig new coal mines (Cumbria!), ancient woodland is being torn down, habitats destroyed, and wildlife sacrificed.

But we CAN help to restore it.

The end of summer doesn’t spell the end of outdoor adventures - The autumn colours and winter frosts are just as beautiful as a hot summer’s day!

I will be sharing daily updates and videos on social media, to remind you what beauty of nature is right on your doorstep, whatever the season, while raising funds to help save our natural world.

I want to inspire you to get outside where you live and experience what our countryside has to offer and to help our wildlife thrive like it once did. There has never been a more important time to support this vital conservation work to make sure that our wildlife is protected.
