Raising money for Sheffield Samaritans

Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential, non-judgmental, emotional support to anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. The Sheffield branch receives over 30,000 calls a year - by phone, e-mail or visit - and is entirely reliant on voluntary support

Story

We are a team of mentalmates who have collectively decided to put the boxing gloves down and walk 26.2 miles over 2 days this July, all in aid of the Sheffield Samaritans.

Walk 1 -  Sunday 11th July

The five weirs walk along the Sheffield canals totalling approximately 8 miles, this will be completed straight after our Sunday morning boxing session!

Walk 2 - Sunday 25th July

The Sheffield round walk totalling approximately 16 miles, we will be completing this instead of usual Sunday morning boxing class. We will be adding the extra 2 miles onto this walk too so we hit the 26.2 mile marathon distance.

The Sheffield Samaritans are based down on Queens Road, they provide such an extremely important service to the people of Sheffield, just £5 of funding enables them to take one phone call from a member of the public in need. During the pandemic the volunteers have worked extremely hard and have been inundated with a higher than normal volume of calls, it would be great to give something back to the volunteers and branch.

This year is the first time we are able to complete the challenge as Team Mentalmate and we are all looking extremely forward to it, if you can spare anything at all to help us reach our £500 target we would be amazing.

Everyone should have someone to talk to. It sounds so simple, yet so many people don’t have that, which is where Mentalmate comes in! We are building a group of mental mates through boxing down at the Knox Boxing Gym in the Wicker area of Sheffield every Wednesday night and Sunday morning. We have found that it is much easier to talk and discuss your feelings whilst exercising, if attendees do not wish to talk then that’s fine but it’s nice to know that you are surrounded by people who are all there for the same reason.

It’s so important to look after your mental health like you would your physical health and at our Mentalmate boxing sessions you can do both! Sometimes people don’t feel able to talk with friends and family for the fear of being judged or treated differently, down at our sessions everyone is welcome, all sizes and abilities with no prior boxing experience needed, so come down and give it a go!
