Story
How it all began
I read a book last year about Mark Beaumont who cycled the world in 195 days smashing the world record by 81 days and it got me thinking ……….
I didn`t once consider taking on the world but could I complete a long distance bike ride? So instead of just putting the book down, I came up with the idea of attempting LEJOG – Lands End to John O Groats (an idea I may soon regret).
About me
I`m the wrong side of 60 but have always kept myself fairly fit and, even after serving 23 years in the Army, I`ve only picked up a few aches and pains along the way. I`m not a cycle enthusiast who turns out in their Lycra in all weathers but enjoy the occasional bike ride in good weather especially during the warmer months and, before you ask, I am not doing this challenge on an electric bike!
The route
I discovered there are several recognised routes – the shortest being approx. 877 miles along the west coast to the route that I chose which is 1091 miles. Although its over 200 miles longer Its less hilly and more scenic and is mainly along the east coast. My aim is to cycle approximately 40 -50 miles per day and complete the route in 3-4 weeks. I also decided to go solo and to take a tent, sleeping bag etc so I could stop each day when I wanted to and not worry about booking B & Bs etc.
Chosen charities
A friend suggested that I cycle for charity and so I have chosen the following 3 charities. The first two need no introduction and I have included a brief description of the third. More information can be found on their respective websites.
BLESMA
MacMillan Cancer
Papyrus - Prevention of young suicide in the UK
There are many other worthwhile charities that i could have chosen but I have had either a direct or indirect connection with these three hence my choice.
I know most people are facing a lot of financial challenges these days but any amount you can donate will be gratefully received.
Thank you
Mike
