Story

Story

East Midlands Khuddam will be taking on the challenge of hiking Kinder Scout this Summer, the highest point in the Peak District, to raise funds for a life-changing water project in rural Senegal.

The route is 14km and covers rugged terrain, steep ascents and the iconic Kinder Downfall. This demanding circular hike follows the historic paths of the famous Kinder Scout Mass Trespass before reaching the summit known as the "Peak of Peaks". Standing 636 metres above sea level, Kinder Scout rewards hikers with spectacular views across the Peak District—but every step uphill will also represent the daily challenges faced by millions of people around the world who still lack reliable access to clean water.

Cause

While we spend a day challenging ourselves in the hills of the Peak District, children in the village of Sangako face a much greater challenge every day.

The local school currently has no adequate and reliable source of clean water. Pupils and staff are often forced to leave the school grounds to fetch water, reducing valuable learning time and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. Limited access to water also impacts hygiene and sanitation, creating additional barriers to education and wellbeing.

Together with Humanity First UK, we are raising funds to install a sustainable water pump system at the school, providing safe, reliable water directly on site.

The Difference Your Donation Will Make

Your support will help fund:

- Installation of a sustainable water pump and water access point

- Water quality testing and commissioning

- Training for local operators and school staff

- Community education on hygiene, water usage and maintenance

- Long-term access to safe water for pupils and teachers

The impact will be transformational:

💧 Reliable access to clean and safe water

💧 Improved hygiene and sanitation standards

💧 Reduced risk of waterborne diseases

💧 Better school attendance and learning outcomes

💧 Less time spent collecting water and more time spent learning

💧 Greater support for young children and girls, who are often most affected by water scarcity

Every Step Matters

As we climb towards the summit of Kinder Scout, we will be reminded that many children walk long distances simply to access one of life's most basic necessities. Our challenge lasts a day; theirs is faced every day.

By supporting this fundraiser, you are helping provide a lasting solution that will benefit generations of pupils in Sangako and create a healthier, safer and more productive learning environment.

Whether you can donate £5, £20, £50 or more, every contribution brings us one step closer to ensuring that a child can turn on a tap at school and have access to clean, safe water.Your generosity can help turn a challenging hike in the Peak District into a lasting source of hope and opportunity for a school community in Senegal.

Together, let's climb higher so that others don't have to walk further for water. 💙💧🏔️
