Nikki’s story:
Did you know it now takes an average of 9 years to be diagnosed with endometriosis in the UK… That is far too long!
My aim throughout July (with the help of close family and friends) is to walk 9,000 steps a day in order to support the 1IN10 who suffer with this life changing condition.
For as long as I have known, I have suffered with heavy and painful periods. I was diagnosed with endometriosis at just 25 years old and at the time it took 3 years of investigations. I was advised I had only a 20% chance of conceiving. I was sent for numerous scans, had countless referrals and was passed around a number of professionals who all shared conflicting and confusing information about my condition. This was quite a scary time to say the least and what followed was a long road of many physical and emotional hurdles.
In 2002, I met my now husband and his children - they have been my absolute rock and without them I wouldn’t be who I am today.
For most of my career I have worked as a nursery nurse. I have always loved children, I always imagined having my own and pre diagnosis, even thought about being a surrogate someday.
Over the years I’ve tried and tested all forms of contraception to try and alleviate some of the pain and “carry on” with every day life.
I’ve had 2 laparoscopies, polyps on my womb and suffered with countless fibroids and cysts - if it involves the female anatomy, you name it, I’ve had it.
Just 12 weeks ago at aged 46 I had a full hysterectomy and am now in recovery.
I am SO ready to tackle this next chapter of my life with those who I love the most by my side.
This is a charity very close to my heart and I am SO passionate about raising awareness of this condition and supporting women of all ages who are also going through it.
Any amount you can donate will be very much appreciated, thanks so much for taking the time to read 🩷💛
This summer, put on your walking shoes, grab your sunhat, and get outdoors to support the 1in10 with endometriosis who wait an average of over 9 years to get a diagnosis.
You can walk on your own, with your dog, with friends and family, or even get your workplace involved. If over 9,000 steps a day feels too much, why not organise a relay and take turns!?
