Story

UPDATE: Challenge postponed revised dates 25th–26th June

Quick update from mission control at Cirque du Sore Legs.

We were due to begin our National Three Peaks Challenge this morning at 6am, starting with Ben Nevis, before heading on to Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon.

However, after closely monitoring the mountain weather forecasts in the days leading up to the challenge, we made the difficult decision to postpone our attempt.

This was not a decision we took lightly. We were absolutely gutted, especially with the training, planning, logistics and support that had gone into getting ready for the weekend. But the forecasts for Ben Nevis and Snowdon were showing a combination of high winds, heavy rain and snow risk, poor visibility and very cold summit conditions. Given the challenge already involves climbing three mountains, driving through the night and operating on very little sleep, we did not feel it was sensible to turn a charity challenge into something potentially unsafe.

The challenge is absolutely not cancelled. We have now rearranged the attempt for 25th–26th June, when we hope to complete it properly and safely within the 24-hour target.

With deep regret, Toby will unfortunately no longer be able to undertake the challenge on the revised dates. Due to other commitments, he cannot make the new timing work until later in the year. Toby has been a huge part of the journey so far, especially with route planning, navigation and training, and he remains very much part of the Cirque du Sore Legs team. We know he will be cheering us on from the sidelines, and we are hugely grateful for everything he has contributed.

All donations already made will continue to go directly to the British Heart Foundation, and the fundraising page will remain open as we build towards the rearranged challenge.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us so far. We are disappointed to have had to make this call, but we know it was the right one. We still fully intend to take on the mountains, complete the challenge, and raise as much as we can for a cause that means a great deal to us.

Cirque du Sore Legs will be back on 25th–26th June.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In June our team will be putting their Heart & Sole into attempting the National Three Peaks Challenge climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) within 24 hours to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

That means climbing:

• Ben Nevis – 1,345m

• Scafell Pike – 978m

• Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon – 1,085m

All within a single 24-hour period, including the driving between the mountains.

What the challenge involves

In total the challenge includes:

• 23 miles / 37km of hiking

• Over 3,000 metres of ascent

• Overnight driving between the peaks

• Very little sleep

• And a lot of stubborn determination.

Why we’re doing it

We’re raising money for the British Heart Foundation, which funds lifesaving research into heart and circulatory diseases.

Heart and circulatory diseases affect millions of people across the UK, and this is something that has touched the lives of many people within our group and our families.

For one member of the team, Tom, this cause is particularly close to home. Tom’s dad, Simon, has lived with a heart defect since he was very young and has faced heart related health complications throughout his life. Most recently, last year he was diagnosed with endocarditis, which became extremely serious and very nearly cost him his life.

Experiencing first hand the work of the doctors, nurses and specialists who treat heart conditions has been incredibly humbling. The expertise, dedication and research behind what they do is genuinely life saving.

In a fitting twist, Simon has volunteered to be one of the drivers supporting our Three Peaks challenge, helping get the team between the mountains while we attempt the climbs.

Being able to take on this challenge while raising money for the British Heart Foundation feels like a meaningful way for the team to give something back.

About the British Heart Foundation

Thanks to research funded by the BHF, the number of people dying from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK has more than halved, but sadly hundreds of people still lose their lives every day.

It’s only thanks to support from people like you that the BHF can continue funding research and developing new treatments and cures.

For example:

£24 could fund two hours of research by an early-career scientist.

Every donation big or small helps move that work forward.

How you can help

If you’re able to donate, we would be hugely grateful for your support.

If you can’t donate, sharing the page helps massively.

Follow the journey

We’ll post updates from:

• training walks

• and (hopefully) the summit of each mountain.

Thank you for the support.
