Cycling the Rinks for MND

In October, Glen Hartley and Jon Fish will be taking on a 170+ mile cycling challenge over three days to raise awareness and fundraise for MND Association and Andy's Man Club.

Friday 2nd October - Starting at 9:30am from Hull Ice Arena, finishing at iceSheffield by 4:30pm. Watch Sheffield Steeldogs play Telford Tigers, face off 7:30pm

Saturday 3rd October - Starting at 12pm from iceSheffield, finishing by 4pm at Planet Ice Leeds. Watch Leeds Knights vs Peterborough Phantoms, face off 6:30pm

Sunday 4th October - Starting at 8:30am from Planet Ice Leeds, finishing by 3:30pm at Hull Ice Arena. Watch Hull Seahawks vs Basingstoke Bisons, face off 5:30pm

MND Association support those with Motor neurone disease (MND). It is a rare, life-shortening condition that damages the nervous system, specifically attacking the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary movement. There are several support groups in and around the Yorkshire area for those living with and around MND.

Andy's Man Club provide incredible work with suicide prevention and supporting men’s mental health. Men gather for free, non-judgmental weekly peer support groups to talk openly or just listen over a brew and biscuits. There are no fees, no bookings, and no sign-up forms; men aged 18 and over can simply walk through the door.

In September 2025, Glens dad, Paul Hartley, was diagnosed with Bulbar Motor Neurone Disease.

Bulbar MND affects speech and swallowing, but like all forms of MND, it is a devastating, life-limiting disease that has a huge impact on both those diagnosed and the people who love and care for them. Despite advances in care and support, there is still no cure.

Along Pauls journey, we have met some truly incredible people. We are grateful for the support of everyone at the Hull & East Yorkshire MND Association Branch, and we've been inspired by families such as the Lidsters – Margaret, Beth and Bex – who sadly lost husband and father David to Bulbar MND. We were also honoured to meet Sir Kevin Sinfield, giving Dad the opportunity to personally thank him for everything he has done to raise awareness and funds for the MND community.

Approximately 5,300 men die every year to mens suicide. This has to stop. The support networks that Andys Man Club offer are reducing that significant number, though there is plenty more to do and achieve.

We are cycling for my dad, we are cycling for everyone currently living with MND, those struggling with suicidal thoughts, for those who will receive a diagnosis of MND in the future, to those who will need a fantastic support network like Andys Man Club in the future, and in memory of those we have sadly lost already to either MND or suicide. We urgently need to find treatments that can slow, stop and ultimately cure the cruel MND disease, and likewise we need to find the best supports out there to help those struggling with suicidal thoughts.
