Story
PBC coach Andrew Runcies story:
In 2024 I was hit with the bombshell news that I had a large tumour of over 20cm diameter in my lower abdomen and a smaller secondary one in my chest. After going into hospital to start the 1st week of chemo, little did I know that it would be over 2 months before I’d return home due to a fractured vertebrae and nerve damage caused by the tumour which resulted in completely losing the use of my left leg and ending up in a wheel chair. After surviving 12 weeks of chemo which were the most brutal few weeks of my life, I then had the challenge of learning to walk again and building back up my strength.
Myself, the fellow coaches and players from Peterhead boys club (ages 5-16 years old) are going to take on the relay for life challenge as a team walking nonstop for 24hrs to raise funds for cancer research. We are doing this to :
- raise awareness of the devastating impact cancer has on all our lives and hopefully to prevent others from going through what I went through. 1 in 2 people will be affected by cancer at some point in their lifetime. Early diagnosis is key and if in doubt get it checked out.
- Do something challenging & difficult to support our fellow cancer patients and survivors because living with and going through cancer treatments is hard.
- Because if I can go from not being able to get out of bed and walk unaided less than a year ago then hopefully this can motivate anyone to take part and support such a worthy cause.
