Within the safety of the playroom children use play and play materials to explore experiences where they may have witnesses or experienced hurt, scary relationships, loss and separation. Their basic needs and need for connections weren't meet and they have not received care, nurture or love. Children use third objects to explore their stories, for many this is the first time they have shared with anyone these feelings, worries and experiences. Children over time verbalise the feelings and start to build greater sense of self and identity
