Story
Thank you for visiting the fundraising page of Mark Rackham (Kate's husband), Caroline Wilson (Kate's sister) and Kate's friends, Evonne Smith, Maxine Thompson and Lauren Zawadzki.
We are taking on the Manchester Half Marathon on Saturday, 12th October, to raise vital funds for the charity Kate founded, Fighting to Be Heard Foundation.
Full disclosure here: We'd self classify our running ability from medium to slow to absolutely none existant. As we said in our training whatsapp only last week - we are doing this for Kate not for times...
In fact, Kate's lifelong hairdresser and friend, Evonne said just this week "Kate would love and find it hilarious (she really would) that we’re pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone to raise money for her and her amazing charity! Her mum can’t believe I’m doing it! She laughs as she asks me how my training's going 🤣 and also can’t wait to support us!!"
Kate passed on 12th June 2024. Kate was a tireless advocate for those living with incurable secondary breast cancer, leaving behind a powerful message to her 17,000 X followers, urging them “not to cry for me” and inspiring thousands with her strength. Kate passed away at the age of 46, leaving her family and a passionate community dedicated to continuing her vital work.
Kate's impact and legacy have continued to extend awareness of Secondary Breast Cancer and her charity far beyond what she could have imagined. BBC News interviewed Mark, Kate's husband, who shared stories about his remarkable wife and Kate as a mum to their girls.
The charity's Chair, Kathryn Gordon, speaks of Kate's tenacity and the foundations she laid for the charity even during her last and difficult months.
According to the Meltwater Report, Kate's final tweet on her account @teacherwithcancer has been viewed 41 million times, and the media campaign since her death has reached 1.6 billion worldwide.
In October, the charity will be launching the 'Fighting to be Heard' Book, which Kate had worked on with the other founders and trustees before her passing. This book will be launched in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the money raised from sales will go towards counselling and support for youngsters going on this journey with parents with an incurable diagnosis.
All of the money we raise during this half marathon run will continue to fund Kates wishes through the charity she founded.
