Running the Camino: A Tribute to Father Martin McAlinden
In memory of Father Martin McAlinden, I am undertaking an epic journey of endurance and remembrance. For 12 consecutive days, I will run ultramarathons covering 40-45 miles each day, traversing the 500 miles of the historic Camino de Santiago. This self-supported run will challenge me through a variety of terrains, from rugged mountains and rolling hills to serene forests and quaint villages.
Father Martin first introduced me to the Camino when we cycled it together in 2011 with a small group. Since then, the magic of the Camino has captivated me, leading me to hike it twice more, as well as exploring the Portuguese route. I also introduced my parents to this amazing experience, who have since completed the pilgrimage multiple times.
Sadly, Father Martin passed away from cancer a few years ago. The last time I saw him was just before another Camino hike, when he asked me to light a candle for him in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral—a request I fulfilled shortly before his passing. This run is not just a test of physical endurance but a tribute to Father Martin, who introduced me to the Camino and positively impacted countless lives.
Partnering with a charity that supports those affected by cancer is a fitting way to honor Father Martin's legacy. Your support can help continue the work of aiding those impacted by this disease, embodying the spirit of compassion and resilience that Father Martin exemplified.
