Story

June 2022 was when our Mum (Sandy) was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

She was advised by her consultant that the best treatment for her diagnosis was for her to be transferred over to Addenbrookes.

Within a couple of weeks she was admitted into hospital to start her first round of intensive chemotherapy….

She received three rounds of intensive chemo in 4 months, we witnessed the horrible, horrible side effects, exhaustion, ridiculous amount of weight & hair loss, multiple stays in hospital, she had various different infections, an overwhelming amount of tablets, trips to Addenbrookes every other day some weeks. Blood transfusions, infusions, bone marrow biopsy, ECG’s, X-rays & scans.

Mum was allowed home and a break from treatment over Christmas 2022 but she was in preparation for her Stem Cell Transplant in the February of 2023.

The team at Addenbrookes had been able to find her an exact match from a donor within Europe. We all felt incredibly lucky & of course so grateful to the donor.

Mum went back into isolation in January that year and apart from a fall a couple of days before the transplant everything went to plan starting with another round of chemo to kill the cells ready for the new donor cells to take over her body.

Since then Mum has still been receiving top up cells from the donor when needed and having consultant appointments for regular check ups and various injections to prevent childhood diseases.

Mum is an absolute fighter, such an inspiration to us all, the days and weeks were so tough but she has come out the other side stronger and braver than ever before, we cannot wait to take on Relay for Life with her as our Captain.

You can easily see why there is so much life saving research needed to fight this horrendous disease.

We all need the research to continue for as long as possible & we would love to raise some money to keep this going, not for us but for our children, grandchildren & all the future generations.

We will forever be in debt not only to Cancer Research UK but to Addenbrookes hospital aswell, they are absolutely amazing. True heroes in our eyes.

We are ready and raring to go for the Relay for Life in July which consists of members of our team walking for 24hrs around a track to raise as much money as possible, so if you can spare a couple of quid it would mean so much 🧡
