Myton Virtual Cycle Challenge 2020 – In memory of Susan Elizabeth Marshall
On the 7th of July 2020, a team of Sue Marshall’s closest friends and family will cycle a distance of 1407 km in her memory. We will aim to cycle the distance from Land's End to John O’Groats – a challenge that Sue wanted to do but sadly never got the chance.
In mid-November 2018, Sue was given the devastating news that she was terminally ill with cancer. Her prognosis was 3 months to live and Sue took the brave decision to turn down chemotherapy in favour of living life to the full for however much time she had left. She reflected on all the things she wanted to achieve and created a bucket-list, which came to be known as the 'Pink Fizz' list, since every time she ticked something off she would raise a glass of pink bubbles to celebrate. Many of her goals included the things she loved: bellringing, walking, and making memories with close friends and family. Her determination to fight back was an inspiration to us all.
7 months after her prognosis, Sue spent some time at Warwick hospital before moving to Myton Hospice. She loved it at the Hospice. It was peaceful and quiet with beautiful gardens, fantastic supportive staff and close to home. She was so popular, we needed a diary to ensure she wasn't swamped with visitors, and at times we almost had to turn people away! She was grateful for the company though and loved visits from friends and family, who snuck in contraband in tippee cups, provided foot massages and reminisced over old photo albums of good times gone by.
Sue sadly passed away at the age of 59 on Sunday 7th July 2019, on a gorgeous Summer's afternoon, to the smell of lavender, the sound of choral singing, and the voices of her Dad, Children and Husband who were all close by watching over her and keeping her company.
This is the most devastating loss of all our lives, but without donations Myton hospice which provides 24 hour care, countless therapies, on-site accommodation for families and so much more would not exist. The hospice made Sue’s final weeks as comfortable and special as they could have been.
We're determined to celebrate Sue's life and support an amazing cause by taking part in one of her favourite passions - cycling! On the 7th of July, a group of Sue’s family and closest friends will be taking part in the Myton Virtual Cycle Challenge 2020 to remember Sue. And of course, we will be raising a glass of pink fizz to celebrate Sue's life at the end!
We are grateful for any support you wish to give us, whether it's joining in or donating to the hospice. We will take comfort knowing that we can help other families in future deal with this difficult time. Our target is £2,300, which is the cost to the hospice for providing full time care to a patient for 5 days.
