Story

Home 2 Home

As the crow flies, the distance between the sports field at Letterkenny Institute of Technology Home of Relay For Life Donegal) and the running track in Tacoma, Washington (Home of Relay For Life, where Relay originated) is 7,113 kilometres. This year, Relay for Life Donegal plans to walk it, run it, cycle it, swim it, paddle it.

Granted, there are some obstacles, chief among them the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention a ban on travelling more than 5km from our homes. That's why the plan is to do it virtually, with individuals and or teams being asked to help us reach the goal between Easter Monday and the start of Relay for Life 2021 on Saturday June 5th. Why Tacoma, you may ask? Surely the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hollywood Sign would be sexier destinations! Indeed they would, but Tacoma holds a special place in Relay for Life history. It was there, in 1985, that local doctor Gordy Platt went to the track to raise money for the American Cancer Society by running a few laps. He ended up running for 24 hours, covering a distance of 132 kilometres. That's pretty much the distance between Derry and Sligo.

Fear not, we're not asking anyone to do that!

We are suggesting an initial registration fee of €20, but once you register and set up your page you can encourage others to sponsor you if you so wish. Your daily distance can be recorded automatically on your page or it can be entered manually each week. This will be closely monitored and the committee will update everyone regularly on the progress being made. CanRelay For Life Donegal walk, run, cycle, swim or paddle 7,113 kilometres between April 5th and June 5th? We have no doubt that the answer is a resounding yes! No matter where you are, join us in The Letterkenny to Tacoma Atlantic Challenge, bringing Relay from Home 2 Home
